“Being busy is not a badge of honor.”
Sleep coach and therapist Keri Cooper exposes how sleep deprivation quietly destroys your performance, focus, and leadership. From caffeine myths to the science of napping, she explains why rest—not grind—is the real edge founders have been ignoring.
We glorify the grind. Every founder I know has done it—burning the candle at both ends, convincing ourselves we can function on five hours because “that’s what it takes.” I’ve lived that life. But the older I get, the clearer it becomes: lack of sleep isn’t proof of dedication. It’s proof of poor strategy.
That’s where Keri Cooper comes in. Keri has spent 25 years as a therapist, and now as a certified sleep science coach, she helps entrepreneurs and executives rebuild their lives by rebuilding their sleep. What she shared in our conversation hit harder than I expected.
She said something that stuck: “Your time is precious, especially as an entrepreneur. You can’t afford to waste it by running on empty.” Sleep isn’t downtime—it’s the foundation of uptime. When you’re not sleeping, your brain is operating in crisis mode. You’re making decisions with half your horsepower, reacting instead of leading.
Keri broke down the biology behind it. Sleep isn’t passive; it’s when your body goes to work repairing tissue, balancing hormones, processing emotions, and regulating your immune system. Skip that, and you’re slowly dismantling your own operating system. That “fog” you feel mid-morning? It’s not coffee deficiency—it’s cognitive debt.
She also dismantled the hero myth of the 5 a.m. entrepreneur. Waking up before dawn to post your grind on social media doesn’t make you disciplined; it makes you tired. Humans are designed to wake with light and sleep with darkness. Fighting that rhythm isn’t high performance—it’s self-sabotage.
We talked about naps. I laughed at first—because who has time for that? But the data is real: a 20-minute nap between 2 and 4 p.m. can reset your focus more effectively than caffeine. That’s when our natural circadian rhythm dips. Instead of fighting biology, work with it. She pointed out that major companies—Google, NASA, Nike—have already figured this out. Productivity rises. Mistakes drop. Energy stabilizes.
Then came caffeine. I thought I was safe drinking coffee at 2 p.m.—apparently not. Keri explained that caffeine has a half-life of up to six hours. That means your 2 p.m. coffee is still in your system when you’re trying to fall asleep at 10. The result? You never hit deep sleep, even if you’re in bed eight hours.
But what really struck me wasn’t the science—it was the story. She told me about a client, a “supermom” entrepreneur who was constantly sick, running on fumes, convinced she could do it all. It wasn’t until she started sleeping—really sleeping—that her business stabilized, her mood improved, and her creativity returned. That hit home.
We ended on something that’s almost countercultural today: the need for rhythm. Weekly rest. Real downtime. Not the kind where you check emails “just in case,” but the kind where you let your body and mind reset. Founders love talking about systems, but most don’t realize our most important system is biological.
So here’s my takeaway: the most relentless thing you can do is rest. Sleep isn’t weakness—it’s a weapon. It sharpens focus, protects your health, and gives your team the leader they deserve. You can replace tools, clients, or strategies—but you can’t replace your mind and body once they break down.
Keri’s work is a reminder that entrepreneurship isn’t a race to exhaustion; it’s a rhythm of intentional recovery. If you want longevity in this game, sleep like your business depends on it—because it does.
